Kanini Kega, a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), has claimed that he survived a frightening attack after attending a political event in Nyandarua County. The incident, which he says happened on Monday, July 13, has sparked fresh debate about the safety of political leaders and supporters during the country's heated political season. The allegations have also raised questions about security, the use of force, and the need for thorough investigations whenever such serious claims are made.

According to Kega, he officially reported the matter at the Oljororok Police Station on Tuesday, July 14. In his report, he claimed that unknown armed men attacked him while he was traveling from a political rally. He also stated that his vehicle was badly damaged during the incident. Photos circulating on social media appear to show a vehicle with shattered windows and visible damage that Kega says was caused during the attack. The images have attracted widespread attention online, with many Kenyans calling for a transparent investigation into what really happened.

The former Kieni Member of Parliament explained that the events began shortly after he attended a Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) political campaign rally held at the Ol Kalou Arboretum in Nyandarua County. The rally was attended by party supporters and local leaders who had gathered to mobilize support ahead of upcoming political activities. After the event ended, Kega said he left the venue and started driving toward Nyahururu, expecting to continue with his journey without any problems.

However, according to his statement, things quickly changed when he noticed three vehicles following him. He alleged that the vehicles had hidden or covered number plates, making it difficult to identify them. Kega claimed that the people inside the vehicles appeared determined to stop him. As the chase continued, he became convinced that his life was in danger.

Kega further alleged that the people chasing him were armed and that he believes they were police officers, although this claim has not been officially confirmed by the authorities. He said the armed men pointed guns toward his vehicle and attempted to shoot at him. According to his account, the firearms initially failed to discharge, giving him a brief opportunity to continue driving away. He claimed that the attackers later managed to fire several shots, with bullets hitting his vehicle as he tried to escape from the scene.

Fearing that he would be killed if he remained inside the vehicle, Kega said he made the difficult decision to abandon his car and run on foot. He reportedly sought refuge in a nearby home where he hid until he believed the danger had passed. He said the experience left him shaken and deeply concerned about his personal safety. The EALA legislator has since maintained that he fears for his life and hopes the authorities will uncover those responsible for the alleged attack.

Lawyer Ndegwa Wahome, who was reportedly present during the incident, has supported Kega's version of events. Wahome stated that after the armed men failed to locate the politician, they turned their attention to his vehicle. According to the lawyer, the group used the heavy butts of their firearms to smash the car, causing extensive damage. He described the incident as shocking and called for an independent investigation to establish exactly what happened.

The claims have generated strong reactions from political leaders, supporters, and members of the public. While some have expressed sympathy for Kega and demanded swift action from security agencies, others have urged caution, saying the matter should be investigated carefully before any conclusions are reached. Many Kenyans have pointed out that allegations involving gunfire and possible misuse of authority are serious and should be handled professionally.

Nyandarua County Commissioner Abdirisack Jaldesa responded to the reports by stating that no official report had initially been recorded regarding the alleged attack. However, following the public attention the matter received, he directed security officers in Ol Kalou to investigate the allegations and determine the facts. He emphasized that the security agencies would carry out their duties according to the law and that any findings would guide the next course of action.

The incident comes at a time when political temperatures are rising in different parts of the country. As political parties continue holding rallies and engaging with supporters, concerns about the security of leaders and the public have become increasingly important. Political gatherings often attract large crowds, and leaders from different parties are expected to move freely while carrying out their campaigns. Any reports of violence or intimidation therefore attract significant public interest.

Security experts have repeatedly emphasized that every citizen, regardless of political affiliation, has the constitutional right to safety and freedom of movement. They also note that any claims involving firearms, threats, or attacks against public officials should be investigated promptly and impartially. Such investigations help establish the truth, reassure the public, and strengthen confidence in law enforcement institutions.

The photos of Kega's damaged vehicle continue to circulate widely across social media platforms, with many users sharing different opinions about the incident. Some believe the damage supports his claims, while others are waiting for the outcome of official investigations before forming an opinion. As is often the case with incidents that gain widespread online attention, many people have urged caution against spreading unverified information until investigators release their findings.

For now, many questions remain unanswered. Investigators will likely examine witness statements, inspect the damaged vehicle, review any available CCTV footage, and gather other evidence that could help establish exactly what happened. These findings will be important in determining whether the incident occurred as described and whether any criminal offences were committed.

As investigations continue, Kanini Kega has maintained that he fears for his safety and hopes those responsible will be identified and brought to justice if the allegations are proven. The authorities have also assured the public that the matter will be investigated. Until official findings are released, the incident remains an allegation, and many Kenyans will be watching closely to see what the investigations reveal.
