Inside Simon Wachira’s Business Empire: Magunas Supermarkets, Nokras Hotels and Kilele Mall

Simon Wachira is a Kenyan businessman known for building Magunas Supermarkets from a small retail shop in Murang’a into a business with interests in wholesale distribution, hospitality and commercial property. His journey began with small-scale trading before expanding into several commercial ventures.

Wachira started as a hawker at Mukuyu market in Murang’a during the 1980s. After saving money from his trading activities, he opened his first retail shop in Mukuyu township in 1990. The shop marked an important step in his transition from informal trading to running an established business.

As the business grew, Wachira ventured into wholesale distribution through Maguna Andu Wholesalers. The operation allowed him to handle larger quantities of goods and serve other retailers. His experience in wholesale trading helped lay the foundation for the development of Magunas Supermarkets.

The first Magunas supermarket was established in Murang’a. The chain subsequently expanded into other towns, building a presence in several parts of Kenya. Published branch listings have identified locations in Murang’a, Nyeri, Kirinyaga, Embu, Meru, Kitui and Nairobi, among other areas.

The expansion enabled Magunas to reach more customers and strengthen its position in the retail sector. However, the exact number of currently operating branches remains unconfirmed because published directories provide differing totals. An updated official branch list would be needed to establish the precise figure.

Wachira later diversified into hospitality. In 2012, he established Nokras Hotel in Murang’a, adding accommodation and event services to his business interests.

In 2018, he expanded into Sagana with Nokras Riverine Hotel and Spa. The hotel serves visitors and organisations seeking accommodation and conference facilities. Published reports describe the property as having 65 rooms, 29 cottages and conference facilities capable of accommodating more than 1,000 participants.

His commercial property interests also include Kilele Mall in Kenol, Murang’a County. Reports have described the development as incorporating a supermarket, a petrol station and an entertainment facility.

Another major development associated with Magunas Company is The Junction Mall in Murang’a, which was officially opened on October 2, 2026. Citizen Digital reported that the project was expected to create more than 500 direct jobs. Wachira, identified as Magunas Company chairman, attended the launch.

The mall represents a further expansion of the commercial interests associated with Wachira. It adds to the retail and hospitality investments linked to his business career and is expected to support employment and commercial activity in Murang’a.

His documented business interests include Magunas Supermarkets, Maguna Andu Wholesalers, Nokras Hotel in Murang’a, Nokras Riverine Hotel and Spa in Sagana, Kilele Mall in Kenol and The Junction Mall in Murang’a.

These ventures show how Wachira expanded from small-scale trading into retail, wholesale distribution, hospitality and commercial property. However, the complete value of his assets, his personal net worth and the full number of operating supermarket branches have not been established through comprehensive public records.

From opening his first shop in Mukuyu in 1990 to expanding Magunas and investing in hotels and shopping malls, Wachira has developed a business portfolio with interests across several sectors of Kenya’s economy.
