Murango was born in Kiandieri, Kirinyaga Central, Kirinyaga County. He attended Kiandieni Primary School and is listed as having scored 401 marks out of 700 in KCPE. His education record includes secondary school, Technical University of Mombasa (TUM), Atlantic University, London Graduate School University and Commonwealth University. His listed qualifications include a PhD in Business Administration, Master of Business Administration, Master's in Mining and Engineering, BSc in Project Management, diploma and certificate qualifications, KCSE C+ and KCPE.
Before joining national politics, Murango served as the Member of the County Assembly for Kerugoya Ward after being elected in 2017. He later became Majority Leader of the Kirinyaga County Assembly. His tenure as Majority Leader placed him at the centre of debates and political disagreements within the county assembly, including the political dispute surrounding the attempted impeachment of Governor Anne Waiguru in 2020.
As an MCA, Murango was listed as the sponsor of the Kirinyaga County Sports and Recreation Bill, 2018. The bill went through the assembly and was assented to on October 7, 2020. He also sponsored the Kirinyaga County Youth Ajira Bill, 2021, which was later recorded as having lapsed.
After moving to the Senate, Murango became involved in national legislation, particularly in agriculture. He has sponsored the Agriculture and Food Authority (Amendment) Bill, 2023, the Coffee Bill, 2023, the Rice Bill, 2023, and the Constitution of Kenya (Amendment) Bill, 2026. The Coffee Bill became law after receiving Presidential Assent on March 13, 2026.
Murango's Senate voting record also includes the October 2024 impeachment proceedings against then-Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. On October 17, 2024, he voted No on all 11 grounds of the impeachment motion recorded in the Senate voting record. The Senate ultimately upheld five of the charges and removed Gachagua from office.
During the Gachagua impeachment hearing, Murango also participated in the proceedings by questioning the National Assembly's lead counsel about companies and allegations contained in the impeachment case.
In the Senate, Murango served as chairperson of the Standing Committee on Agriculture, Livestock and Fisheries. The committee handled legislation and other matters concerning agriculture, livestock, fisheries and farmers.
Murango has also raised issues affecting Kirinyaga County. In February 2025, he called for action over pending bills owed by the Kirinyaga County Government to contractors and suppliers and raised concerns about education capitation shortfalls.
