New Kenya Planters Cooperative Union (New KPCU PLC), in collaboration with the Ministry of Cooperatives and MSMEs Development, has announced a major coffee extension training opportunity under the National Coffee Revival Programme.
The programme is seeking 1,000 Coffee Extension Training Champions who will be trained and later support coffee farmers and cooperatives in selected coffee-growing counties across Kenya.
The opportunity targets passionate community-rooted individuals who can help strengthen coffee production and support farmers at ward level.

About the Coffee Extension Training Programme
The initiative is part of efforts to revive and expand coffee production in Kenya through the Cooperative Movement. According to the announcement, the programme seeks to contribute to increasing coffee production from 51,852 metric tonnes to 151,000 metric tonnes.
The training will prepare selected individuals to work as ward-level extension champions and support coffee farmers with technical knowledge, rehabilitation of abandoned farms, proper coffee production practices and farmer organisation.

New KPCU is looking for 1,000 champions for the Coffee Extension Training Programme. The opportunity is available in selected coffee-growing wards across the listed counties.

Training Details
The selected champions will undergo two weeks of intensive theory and practical training.
The training venue will be the Coffee Research Institute and designated county training centres.
Successful trainees will receive a Certificate of Completion issued jointly by New KPCU and the Coffee Research Institute.
The training itself is fully sponsored. However, trainees will be responsible for their own transportation costs.
What Will the Trained Champions Do?
After successfully completing the training, the extension champions will be expected to provide private extension services to farmers in their wards.
Their responsibilities will include training farmers on Good Agricultural Practices (GAPs) to improve yields and supporting the rehabilitation of abandoned or underperforming coffee farms.
They will also promote the adoption of quality planting materials, mobilise and organise farmers into cooperatives or farmer groups, and assist farmers with record keeping, crop monitoring and basic farm management.
How Trainees Can Earn From the Services
According to the announcement, extension champions will be able to earn income by providing services to farmers.
They will agree on reasonable service fees at ward level through cooperatives or farmer groups, with the fees approved by the Standing County Technical Committee or relevant arrangements.
Champions will also work with cooperatives to streamline collection of service fees through cooperative deductions or mobile money payments, with an emphasis on transparency and accountability.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants for the Coffee Extension Training Programme must meet the requirements set out in the announcement.
- Hold a Certificate, Diploma or Degree in Agriculture, Agribusiness, Horticulture, Agricultural Economics or a related field.
- Be residents of the ward they wish to serve and provide proof of residence.
- Demonstrate a passion for transforming rural livelihoods through sustainable coffee farming.
- Have effective communication and teamwork skills.
- Not have been previously trained under this programme.
Additional Advantage
Previous experience in coffee farming, cooperatives or agricultural extension will be an added advantage.
Familiarity with digital tools for data collection and knowledge of coffee agronomy and post-harvest techniques will also be beneficial.
